See the "Technical Description" section for the procedure for presenting this Montessori material to the child.
Materials: A tray containing a unit bead, a ten-unit bar, a hundred-unit cube, and a 1,000-unit cube. A unicolor felt placemat.
Teach the children the names of quantities using the "3 Period Lesson."
The purpose of the first period is to make the association between the concept and the name. The concept in this case is quantity.
Bring the tray to the child's table. Put the tray in front of you. Put the felt board in front of the child. Take the unit bead and place it on the mat in front of the child.
Say "one." Remove the unit bead. Take the ten unit bar and place it on the mat in front of the child. Say "ten." Take out the ten-unit bar. Take the hundred-unit cube and place it on the mat in front of the child. Say "one hundred." Take out the hundred-unit cube. Take the 1,000-unit cube and place it on the mat in front of the child. Say "one thousand." Take out the 1,000-unit cube.
The purpose of the second period is to check whether the child has made the association between the quantities and their names. If the child is able to choose a specific quantity from the others, it means that he has understood that a specific name represents a specific quantity.
